Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To detect the sleep disorders and comorbid conditions in patients with epilepsy and their mothers.

METHODS

Seventy patients diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and their mothers were included in the study. Pittsburg Sleep Qualty Index were performed to the patients and their mothers. Seventy patients diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy were included in the study. The study was approved by local ethics committee of Dokuz Eylul University.

RESULTS

Among the patients 31 (44.3 %) were female and 39 (55.7 %) were male. The mean age was 11.39±2.76 years. Sleep disorders were more prevalent in children with frequent seizures. There were no significant relationship between type of epileptic seizures, electroencephalographic abnormalities and sleep disturbance. The prevalence of sleep disorders were increased in mothers who have children with increased sleep quality scores.

CONCLUSION

Patients with frequent epileptic seizures and also their mothers should be evaluated for sleep disorders.
